If using Oreo cookies, remove the cream centers and discard. Place cookies in a plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin until the crumbs resemble dirt. Mix the cookie crumbs with half of the chopped chocolate. Set aside.

Tuck the ends of gummy worms in the cookie "dirt". Be sure to have a worm on each piece. Store in the refrigerator. Chill for at least 3 hours before serving. Cut into 15 squares, or serve with a clean garden trowel or a toy sand shovel if serving in the flower pot.

I have made this many times and never added peanut butter or chocolate pudding.

The sandwich cookies are they the cream filled Oreos? or the chocolate wafer cookies? If using Oreos is it the whole cookie or just the chocolate cookie not the cream inside?

what could I substitute for the peanut butter---any other flavoring??

For a vanilla filling mix 1 cup whipped topping and a tsp of vanilla extract with cream cheese and confectioners sugar. It should be yummy!!

If you don't have a spring form pan, can this be made in another kind of pan?

You could make the cake in an 8 or 9 inch square pan, but you'll have to cut slices and serve from the dish. The great thing about a springform pan is that the cake pops out so you can see the beautiful layers.

Why Don't You Go Eat Dirt (Cake)?

My birthday falls close to the Fourth of July, so some years, when I was a kid, my mom would make a seasonally respectful dessert, like a birthday flag cake topped with whipped cream, blueberries, and raspberries. Those years were OK. Much better, in my estimation, were the years when she made dirt cake.

The Secret to Perfect Cream Pie (Hint: It's in the Name)

Maybe you remember dirt cake, which in its classical presentation came served in a terra cotta pot, with gummy worms and a flower or two poking out of its surface? The ingredients were pure convenience—Oreos were a must, Cool Whip was de rigeur, and Jell-o vanilla pudding was often incorporated to lend a little heft—and pure satisfaction, too (there is literally no conceivable universe in which a mixture of Oreos, Cool Whip, and pudding could taste bad.) These components were layered in that flowerpot, a bed of crushed Oreos on top, of course, and that was the point: the cake looked like dirt and tasted like heaven. The thing was so delicious that it basically proved Tommy Werner's Theory of Store-Bought Ingredients.

Still: I've long wanted to make my own dirt cake, slightly fussy, everything from scratch—just to have a project, I guess. (Easier than having friends!) So recently I did. I took it to a party where both children and adults were in attendance, and I'm here to say—those adults were impressed as hell. The children were somewhat more taciturn, though to be fair most of them were babies.

What goes into it? Start with a recipe from the Epi archives—these chocolate shortbread cookies take the place of Oreos. Then make a pastry cream and let it chill. Cream softened butter with cream cheese, add the pastry cream, and beat to combine. Separately, whip some heavy cream and fold it gently into the pastry cream to lighten things a bit (regular readers will recognize this as a technique that I've been banging on about for some time).

Now comes the fun part! Get yourself an 8-inch flowerpot, preferably terra cotta. You could also do this in a trifle bowl if you wanted to undermine the spirit of the whole enterprise. (Martha Stewart, in her totally basic dirt cake recipe, likes to sterilize the terra cotta pot for several hours in the oven beforehand. Whatever, Martha!) Spoon some of the pastry cream mixture into the bottom, sprinkle a couple gummy worms over, top this with crushed chocolate cookies. Repeat until all your ingredients are gone, finishing with a layer of crushed cookies to resemble soil. Decorate like you're planting a garden, with flowers and a garden spade for serving.

    1. Pulse cookies in a food processor until coarse crumbs form (or place in a plastic bag and pound with a rolling pin) set aside.
    2. Pour milk into a medium saucepan scrape in vanilla seeds and add pod. Heat over medium until just before boiling.
    3. Whisk eggs, sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a large bowl. Whisking constantly, pour half of milk mixture into egg mixture. (Putting a wet towel underneath bowl will help stabilize it.) Add egg and milk mixture to remaining milk mixture in saucepan. Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until custard is thick and bubbles just a bit, about 7 minutes, then continue to cook 1 minute more.
    4. Strain custard through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean bowl discard vanilla pod. Add 1/4 cup butter and whisk to combine. Cover with plastic wrap, pressing directly on surface of custard, and chill until cold, about 3 hours.
    5. Using an electric mixer on medium-high speed, beat cream cheese and remaining 3/4 cup butter in a large bowl until smooth. Add chilled custard and beat until combined.
    6. Using electric mixer on medium-high speed, whip cream in a medium bowl until medium peaks form. Using a rubber spatula, gently fold whipped cream into custard to combine.
    7. Layer custard and cookie crumbs alternately in flower pot, inserting gummy worms at random, ending with crumbs. Stick a flower or two into cake to decorate, adding more worms on top of "soil" if desired.
    1. Custard can be made 1 day ahead keep chilled.

    Chocolate Dirt Cake Recipe

      Chocolate Oreo cookies (20oz.) crushed

    Crumble cookies in a bowl and set aside.

    In a mixing bowl mix pudding mix and chilled milk according to directions on package.

    Cream sugar and cream cheese together in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy.

    Fold in thickened pudding.

    Mix thoroughly and fold old in whipped topping.

    Assemble cake by layering cookie crumbs and pudding starting and ending with crumbs on top, in a container of your choice. (See a few suggestions Below).

    Place in refrigerator a for a couple of hours to chill thoroughly.

    Sand Pail Cake

    Line a child size, unused and cleaned sand pail, with tin foil.

    Layer pudding mix and crumbs as above.

    Wrap toys such as a toy rake and spade in plastic wrap or foil and insert in cake just deep enough for handles to stand up.

    Tie on a ribbon or bow (optional).

    For more fun, bury some candy wiggle worms in the pudding or attach them to outside of the pail.

    Flower Pot Cake

    Using an unused and cleaned plastic flower pot, line the bottom and sides with tin foil.

    Wrap artificial flowers in plastic or foil and insert into pot making a flower arrangement.

    Use a 13" x 9" oblong pan (or equivalent size) or glass dish and layer according to above instructions.

    Flower Garden Cake

    Mix 1 1/2 cups Angel Flaked coconut and a few drops of green food coloring to make a grass green color.

    Sprinkle over top of 13" x  9" cake.

    Stick various colored Jelly Beans on tip of green colored party picks and poke into top of cake, making it colorful like a beautiful flower garden.

    What child won't go wild over this?

    If the party picks are too long to stand up sturdy, snip one end off to the size that works/stands up, best.
